Yagami-ryu is structured around three main pillars:
• Nawasuji (縄筋): Rope techniques and patterns
• Taijutsu (体術): Body handling, movement, positioning, and control
• Kyushogaku (急所学): Knowledge of vital points and pressure points
Among the three elements mentioned above, the existence of Taijutsu (体術) is extremely unique in traditional Japanese shibari.
Taijutsu (体術) is the systematic use and control of the body — both the rigger's (縛師) and the model's (受け手 / ukete) — as a foundational element separate from but integrated with rope techniques (nawasuji / 縄筋).
Taijutsu is heavily influenced by Ren Yagami's long background in aikido, which emphasizes efficient, safe, and ethical body manipulation. In Yagami's words, the style is about "tying the body to establish a connection/flow" (体を縛り、流れを結ぶ), where rope is a supportive tool, but the real power comes from body-to-body communication, tension management, and precise physical control.
Among of Yagami style Taijutsu, Tetori sankaku (手取り三角, the shoulder lock for the box tie) is one of the most signature foundational techniques in Yagami style of shibari. Beyond the flashy moves, we will break down and analyze the details and functions within them.
The rigger will also learns to read and influence the model's posture, balance, breathing, muscle tension, and emotional state through direct physical contact.
Techniques include subtle grips, joint locks, pressure on muscles/tendons, directional pushes/pulls, and weight shifting to guide the model into desired positions with minimal force.
Ethical & Safe Manipulation:A major focus is protection — knowing how to break or control a body safely so you also know how to prevent injury. Emphasis on "the Taijutsu Triangle" (a concept taught in workshops): positioning, leverage, and timing to achieve maximum effect with minimum risk/effort.
